Candyman
"Candyman" is the third single from Christina Aguilera's third album Back to Basics. One of the tracks from the album's second disc, it was written by Aguilera and Linda Perry. The single was premiered at the Fashion Rock Concert in New York City on September 8, 2006 and was confirmed as the third single during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin Eve 2007.

Background and writing

According to Linda Perry, "Candyman" was the first song created during their Back to Basics sessions. Aguilera originally did not intend for Perry to be a main producer on the album, however the pair hit it off right away after the conception of this song.[citation needed] Perry would go on to produce the entire second disc off of the album, with "Candyman" being a stand out track in Aguilera's eyes, labeling it one of her favorites early on.[citation needed] Christina calls it the 'feel good' song from Back to Basics and has stated on several occasions that it is her favorite song from the album.

Perry and Aguilera have said that the song was inspired by the 1941 Andrews Sisters' hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy".Critics have also pointed out the striking resemblances, although usually complimenting Aguilera and the style of the song.

The song includes the military cadence "Tarzan & Jane Swingin' on a Vine," sampled from the album Run to Cadence with the U.S. Marines, Volume 2.[5] The song has been used in Verizon Wireless television commercials for the LG Chocolate (VX8500) cell phone/MP3 player hybrid.

Release

Originally, "Candyman" was to be the second single off the album, but the label pushed for "Hurt" hoping it would have comparable success to 2002's "Beautiful"[6] and hoping it would become a holiday hit. The song was released on February 5, 2007 in the US. "Candyman" has reached #25 released on the Billboard Hot 100 in its seventh week on the chart. The song is to be released on April 16, 2007 in the UK. [7] Unfortunately, the single is only available through downloads and will not be released as a physical single in many countries, including the UK and others located in America. An imported version of the single from Germany can be bought from BestBuy on April 10, 2007 and in HMV on August 16, 2007. [8] [9]

Music video
The music video for the single "Candyman" was filmed on January 28, 2007. It was directed by Matthew Rolston and co-directed by Aguilera. It is based on a 1940s war theme and Aguilera rented out an airport to film it. In the music video, Christina Aguilera is dancing and singing in three different hair colors, including redhead, blonde and brunette, as if she were in a singing trio, a tribute to the Andrews Sisters.[10] She also appears in scenes inspired by pin-up girls Judy Garland, Betty Grable, and Rita Hayworth.[11] The video also features product placement for Campari.

On February 22, 2007 MTV gave the World Premiere of "Candyman" live on TRL and later on MTV's Making The Video. The video debuted at number six on TRL[12] and went on to top the countdown.

Chart performance

The single had first appeared at #95 on the Pop 100 due to the success of "Ain't No Other Man", while the single was stalled for several weeks in the Bubbling Under section of the Billboard Hot 100. "Candyman" first debuted on the Hot 100 at #99, based only on digital downloads as RCA had not sent "Candyman" to radio stations. It fell off the chart the following week and re-entered at #90 a few weeks later. The single has peaked at #25 in the Billboard Hot 100, but currently it has dropped back to #35 due to several new entries entering the top twenty. In the UK the single is also garnering much popularity, currently at number #17 without being officially released on the UK Singles Chart based solely on digital download sales. "Candyman" is #11 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs and #18 on the Hot Digital Tracks. "Candyman" has also helped the album "Back to Basics" re-enter the Official UK Album Chart.[
